Moldova: Former Moldovan transports minister sentenced to one year, four months of imprisonment

The former transports and roads infrastructure minister, Iurie Chirinciuc, has been sentenced to one year and four months of imprisonment in a closed prison, for influence peddling and abuse of power. The sentence was pronounced by magistrates of the Buiucani district court of Chisinau today (09.08.2017).

The former transports minister was detained on 27 April, being suspected of having organized a criminal scheme to particularly large amounts of financial sources. Iurie Chirinciuc was tried on three counts: passive corruption to prompt economic agents to give up general contractor agreements, illegal extraction of minerals and abuse of office to construct a road.

Chirinciuc signed an agreement on recognizing the guilt and the criminal file was considered in special procedure.
