Moldova: Former deputy to be tried for treason in favor of Russia
Former deputy, Iurie Bolboceanu, will be tried for treason in favor of Russia. Prosecutors have completed their criminal investigation and filed the case with the court.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, Bolboceanu was recruited by the officers of the Main Intelligence Agency of the General Staff of the Russian Ministry of Defense (GRU), which is a foreign espionage service.
Thus, in the period of 5 October 2016 and 17 March 2017, the former MP allegedly sent to the Agency information of national interest that could be used to the detriment of Moldova’s interests.
The information provided represented data on the strategies and tactics of national legislative reforms, accumulated from decision-making political figures, personal data and vulnerabilities of high-ranking persons in the state, promoters of political reforms, tactical evolution of the implementation of the Association Agreement between the RM And the EU, detailed information on the intentions and legislative plans of the parliamentary groups in the government, based on data gathered from within political parties. All this information had a strategic potential and could be used to the detriment of our country’s interests.
In this case, law enforcers established several systematic and clandestine meetings, the use of special methods and techniques of counter shadowing, the use of secure and hidden channels of connection and offering of cash rewards for the tasks fulfilled.
If found guilty, the former deputy risks from 12 to 20 years of imprisonment.
