May 6, 2020 – Zagreb Declaration reiterates European perspective of Western Balkans

The EU-Western Balkans Zagreb summit took place via video conference on 6 May 2020. EU leaders agreed on the Zagreb declaration, with which the Western Balkans partners have aligned themselves.

In recalling the 2000 Zagreb, the 2003 Thessaloniki and the 2018 Sofia Summits, the Declaration once again reaffirms the European Union’s unequivocal support for the European perspective of the Western Balkans. The Western Balkans partners reiterated their commitment to the European perspective as their firm strategic choice. The credibility of this commitment depends also on clear public communication and the implementation of the necessary reforms.
Declaration stated the EU support to the Western Balkans partners and its commitment to actively support their efforts to combat the coronavirus outbreak and its impacts on societies and economies. To that end, the EU has mobilised a package of over EUR 3.3 billion to the benefit of the Western Balkans, as outlined in the Commission Communication of 29 April on Support to the Western Balkans in tackling COVID-19 and the post-pandemic recovery. In addition to the immediate support for the health sector, and significant support for the social and economic recovery needs of Western Balkans partners, this package includes 750 million EUR of Macro-Financial Assistance and a 1.7
billion EUR package of assistance from the European Investment Bank.
