Established: 2002
Structure: headed by Director; subdivided into several departments and sections; four regional offices in operation in BiH
Competencies: prevents, detects, and investigates various criminal offences within its jurisdiction (including organized crime, terrorism, war crimes, human trafficking, corruption, and financial crimes)
Level of Independence
– Permanence: established in 2002 upon the adoption of the 02.07.2002 Law on the Agency for Information and Protection
– Appointment: Director is appointed by the Council of Ministers upon proposal of the Selection Commission in accordance with the Law on Police Officials of BiH
– Removal: “The Council of Ministers shall appoint and dismiss the Director, Deputy Director, Assistant Director for the Criminal Investigative Department and the
Assistant Director for Internal Control Department under the conditions and in a procedure according to the Law on Police Officials of BiH.” – Law on the State Investigation and Protection Agency
– Immunity: No

– Appointment: a Deputy Chief Prosecutor acts as Head of the Department and is appointed by the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council
– Removal: High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council
– Immunity: Yes
– Financial Autonomy: budget adopted in standard procedure
