Albanian parliament delays vote on justice reform legislation
Albania’s parliament has postponed until next week a vote on six draft laws from the judicial reform package, local media reported on Wednesday.
The vote has been initially scheduled for Thursday.
The draft bills are not incomplete this is the reason for the postponement, Albanian news agency ATA reported citing sources from parliament.
A new date for voting on the six draft laws will be set on Thursday.
In July, the parliament voted unanimously a crucial judicial reform package, making amendments to 46 articles of the constitution. The move compiled with the expert advice of EU and US justice missions and suggestions from the Venice Commission.
The reform of Albania’s justice system, which has been discussed since 2014, aims to fight political appointments in the judiciary. To make the justice reform work the parliament needed to adopt seven laws. One of them was the so called Vetting law, voted on last month. It introduces evaluation of the professional preparation, moral integrity and level of independence from organised crime, corruption and political power of Albanian judges and prosecutors.
